Super Typhoon Durian (Philippines codename: Reming)
hit the Philippines on November 30 and December 1, 2006. The typhoon
wreaked havoc throughout the Bicol Region, particularly in the provinces
of Albay, Camarines Sur and Sorsogon.
Durian, one of the strongest typhoons to hit Philippines
in years, destroyed an estimated 120,000 homes. Reports say that approximately
1,000 people have died as a result of this typhoon, and more than
800,000 people have been affected - many stranded
in their homes without electricity, food or water.
Others are holed up in schools, churches and other temporary shelters
across the Bicol region. Fernando Gonzales, the governor of Albay
has said, "Every corner of this province has been hit.
It is a total devastation. Never before in history have we seen water
like this. Almost every residential area was flooded."
Rescue
efforts have been hampered by the bad roads and the soft ground, forcing
workers to wade into the muck to retrieve bodies.
Manila’s Cathedral of Praise Church is networking with several
churches across denominational lines in the Bicol region. An initial
sum of 4,000 relief packs containing rice, sardines, cooking oil,
and clothing/blankets is being prepared.
FTH has underwritten half of the initial budget for
this project ($12,500-- $6.25 per relief pack).
This relief effort will likely continue for some time.
