This food was distributed in the primary school that VH runs, in their home for abandoned babies (which currently nurtures 25 infants who have lost their parents to AIDS), and in their 2 homes for abused girls which now has 60 girls who have been referred by community services. There was also a distribution of food paks to street children and the homeless in the city of Manzini, Swaziland.
The other school was able to increase its enrollment from 300 to 450 students and the teachers tell us that the nutritional content is making a very visible difference already in the children's hair color and skin color.
FTH is currently contributing 25% of the total food budget for this ministry. The conditions in this region are horrific, with over-crowded refugee camps housing over 1.5 million people. Irene's passion to provide a future for these children knows no bounds.
She also has a large primary school, and provides 2 - 3 meals daily for children in various refugee camps, such as Ameda. Her goal is to have a school within walking distance of each of the refugee camps in the northern region. FTH also distributed a container of food through Children of the Nations, who work with what is known as 'the invisible children'. These are homeless children who find shelter and safety within fenced areas each night so they are not harmed.
Good News Ministries, just outside of Kampala, Uganda also received a container of food for a primary school they opened in February 2006. They are accommodating currently 450 students at King Solomon Academy and feeding each child a midday meal, so that they can have a full day of classes. The unemployment rate in Kampala is 80%, and few children have the opportunity for education because all schools are fee based. Archived News |
