Dominican Republic
The
area of Barahona in the Dominican Republic is very underdeveloped
and neglected. FTH’s three containers were held up in customs
and it took 3 long weeks of exhaustive effort to get them released!!
The cause of the hold up was two-fold: (1) new personnel installed
after the May elections, and (2) changes in the import/customs laws…
both of these combined spell D-E-L-A-Y-S.
The food will be stored at the military base in Barahona. We met with
the Lieutenant, who is a Christian. Volunteers will break the containers
down into 6,000 family packs that will be distributed through local
churches in 17 “battes” (shanty towns for Haitian immigrants).
These ‘battes’ are very, very poor - six adults and six
children live in one home! [pictured above] In Bombita there are ten
single-toilet latrines for 375 FAMILIES (approx 2,000 people).
We
bought some rice and beans in country and distributed it in a batte
called Alta Grassi. About 150 or so families live there. One mother
of nine [pictured left] said she had absolutely NO food in the house
at all, and only 11 pesos (33 cents USD) to her name. She woke up
that morning and cried to the Lord, “How will my children eat
today!” Then the pastor’s wife came by with a coupon for
a food pack… her face was beaming all day, and so were her kids!
The evening crusades were well attended (maybe 8-10,000 per night).
The team did a lot of evangelism around the city during the days and
many people were touched with the positive message of the Gospel.
