Samoa Tsunami | News

October 3, 2009

On 29 September, an 8.3 magnitude earthquake, followed by tsunamis, struck Samoa, Tonga and American Samoa, leaving thousands homeless, and entire villages crushed. Over 140 have been confirmed dead, and these numbers are expected to increase as damage to the infrastructure hampers rescue efforts. FTH has made contact with Patricia Duininck of Rhema Pacific Bible College in the city of Apia, Samoa. They are mobilizing their staff and students to help in the relief effort. They have offered all the assets of the ministry to the government for help: their dormitories, vehicles, ship, and manpower. Here is an excerpt of Patricia’s blog on September 30th:

“The situation on the island is grave in the south east portion of Upolu. Today 110 confirmed dead, 146 critically wounded, many are still missing. Damage of 40 million USD....

The greatest needs right now are food water clothes transportation and man power.  We will continue to make and deliver water with our water purification system....

Staff member Arthur Mulitalo took water, clothes, and a load of overseas doctors to the hardest hit area today.  They recovered/helped bury 26 bodies. All my men will do the same tomorrow.  Please pray for them.  They are having to bury the dead immediately upon identification.

They continue to be a beacon of light and hope to all they meet and have been ministering to the families.”
