Situation Report – 22 March 2011

- 9,079 confirmed deaths

- 12,782 reported as missing

- (21,861 dead or missing)

- Survivors have suffered freezing weather including snow and rain for eleven straight days, dropping to minus 2 degrees Celsius last night

- 216,000 households have no power

- 875,000 households have no access to water

- It is estimated that a month before restored in worst affected areas

- 318,213 people in 2,063 evacuation centres

- Construction of 33,000 temporary shelters has began but spare land is difficult to find in mountainous coastal region

- People living in intact homes are reportedly not receiving consistent or substantial support as food is being prioritised to evacuation centres.

- People who still live in homes still require assistance as they have no access to food, water and basic supplies

- 90% of telecommunications disrupted by event have been restored

- 90% of national highways are no open to public

- Public transport has restarted
