Childcare Kitgum Servants - Uganda | News
November 17, 2010
The district of Kitgum is in the northern part of Uganda, about 60 miles to the south of the Sudanese border. It has been ravaged by a civil war lasting over two decades. Today, even though there is relative peace in the area, you can still feel the pain and suffering that the war has caused everywhere you go.
At a time when children were afraid to sleep at night in case they be kidnapped and forcibly recruited into the rebel militia; at a time when most adults lived in IDP camps (Internally Displaced Persons) because their own villages were either unsafe or demolished; at a time when despair was so heavy it was almost tangible - one Australian woman came with a word from God to bring love and rest, hope and a future to the children of Kitgum. Thus began the ministry of Childcare Kitgum Servants. Today there are over 8,000 children whose lives are very different because of “General Grandma” Irene Gleeson!
In October 2010, our International Director from the UK, Gwyn Williams, visited the CKS and was deeply impacted by all he witnessed.
“Creating not only a safe house or a place of rest, but a place
of restoration and hope, working with the children to enable them to reach their full potential, [Irene] has developed the opportunities for them to excel. As part of the endeavour to make this happen, Feed the Hungry supports the feeding program for the schools – which is a significant task as they use 8 tonnes of rice, maize, and beans every week in order to feed over 8,000 children through the 5 different schools they run in the area.
The school program has been extended by developing a technical college for the youth to learn building skills, carpentry, metalwork, tailoring, and even a driving school, whilst also developing creative opportunities for the young people to express themselves through painting, dance, music, and rap. GUITARS FOR GUNS is one of the programs helping ex-child soldiers get over the traumatic experience of being forced into war by being able to release their energy in a positive way. Seeing Hakiim teach rap and dance moves to the younger kids was exquisite, and standing in front of the 15 ft high murals painted by Everest Otto was
extraordinary.”
CKS does not receive any government funding for their work, so your partnership is crucial to continuing the fantastic work Irene and her staff are accomplishing. You too can be part of the transformational work being done in Kitgum through your donation to LeSEA Global Feed the Hungry today.
